Before I started this show, I had a huge case of stage fright. Thanks to Bec and Jack for giving me wonderful pep talks. And not to mention the whisky and coke I sipped before hand. Heh. Technical difficulties managing WinAmp’s playlists were causing me a bit of grief during this three-hour experience, but nonetheless, everything ended up going in ways that were fun, and in ways that I never expected. Before the show started, I worked out a semblance of a theme, but as soon as the show began, I realized it was going to be nothing like what I’d planned. Thanks to Bec for hitting her head on her desk at the start of the show. Heh. In an instant, the theme morphed into blindness-related accidents and injuries. Farhan had the most stories of anyone. John, who tends to squeeze in a call or message or two when he feels is most advantageous, also captured the show with his special moments. The subtext of the show was interesting and unexpected with an amazing number of people who have roller-skated, rollerbladed, ice-skated, and other wheel-related activities. Where was I when these opportunities were available? I need to try these things now. That’s all I know. An interesting note: Limbo Rock was everyone’s most popular roller-skating song. Though Amy’s migraine caused her to miss the show, I was gifted with the addition of three new live listeners, Dan, Sarah, and Nick. Patrick took the time to both listen and call from his mobile phone, and I was treated to a call from Kevin on a break while working, who made time to add his story of “flight from the top step without a deck.” The show was laid back, relaxed, and just what the Sunday evening needed to make the weekend complete and to prepare us all for the week to come.

The theme for this week's show did not come until two days before it aired. Though the situation that inspired the show is sad, the resulting show was very uplifting for me and did wonders for my spirit. I decided that I had to make something positive to come from my situation. Then it came to me. “Ah yes. This week's show should be a tribute to friends!” And so it was.
The show begins with my traditional call from Amy and then a welcome call from Donald Duck. As I share some of the details of my situation, I am surprised to find myself beginning to get tears in my eyes right there on my own show. John, however; brightens the mood and sets the stage for a very interesting evening.
This show is filled with recordings of funny and touching experiences that go back as far as 1993. We hear a recording of a show that Patrick and I did when he visited me in Portland. This features a Patrick with his head in a sink, a set of stereo mics, and his power to “just add water” to make me laugh perhaps the hardest I have laughed in my life! I challenge you to put on a pair of headphones during this segment and keep a straight face. I don’t think anyone can do it. Trust me; you don’t want to miss out on this combination of Patrick “mouth peeing” and Mary Ann laughter!
Given this is a tribute to friends, I could not forget about my dear friend, Amy. I play a recording of my trip to visit her last Thanksgiving. In this segment, we hear what it sounds like when I do a strange-voiced cause/effect analysis by assuming that lovingly squishing cute little dogs can make phone numbers appear in directory assistance. I think my “talk to the animals” voice offers a major dose of unbelievable Mary Ann incrimination. It is only fitting then, that we get to hear Amy and her family (complete with their own original collection of voices) educating us about, of all things, tryptophan and colicky babies.
This show winds up with a final call from Amy who recreates her childhood rendition of the funniest version of The Colonel Bogey March that you’ve ever heard, complete with laughter that compares to that of an old man. Whether you listen to the show or not, you must hear Amy perform this isolated and hilarious version for the audience. Thanks to John for researching the title of this track and for providing the edited sample for your listening enjoyment.
With touching phone calls, fun recordings, and stories that are sure to make you smile, this show truly allows the listener to get to know the Mary Ann behind the microphone.
Extra notes: John was inspired to take the orchestral version of "The Colonel Bogey March" found at the link above and combine it with Amy's isolated incrimination. Put'em together and what do you got? Find out here! When we were kids, I always used to make her do this in her cute little strange way that only she can do. It made me laugh 19 years ago and it still makes me laugh to this day. When you download and listen to John's new and improved version, you will see how his magical creativity found a way to make it even more hilarious! This, is, priceless! Note that you will not find this special version in the show.
